Per 216-RICR-40-05-1.5.6(A), licenses "expire biennially on the first (1st) day of July of the next even-numbered year," i.e. the license runs through June 30 of the even year. The renewal application and fee must be filed before July 1 of each even-numbered year, with payment postmarked on or before July 1 (1.5.6(B)); RIGL 5-37-10 sets the application submission at on or before June 1, with the new certificate effective July 1 and expiring June 30 two years later.

If you miss the deadline

Reinstatement is at the Board's discretion upon payment of the current registration fee plus the additional fee under RIGL 23-1-54 ($170 late renewal fee per the fee regulation). Reinstatement from inactive to active status costs $1,090 (fee reg § 2.9, RIGL 5-37-11). The board page directs previously licensed physicians to email DOH.Elicense@health.ri.gov for a reactivation or reinstatement application.

What CME do I attest to at renewal? ▾
40 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 / AOA Category 1a credit per two-year cycle, earned by June 1 of the even-numbered renewal year and documented to the Board (216-RICR-40-05-1.5.5(A)). Note the June 1 CME deadline precedes the June 30 license expiration. Rhode Island also has a one-time, one-hour Alzheimer's/cognitive-impairment course requirement; a 2026 bill (H8545) proposing to make that hour recur each renewal period had not been enacted as of our last statute check.
