When it is due
Rolling per-licensee registration period: NY Education Law 6502 has the Department establish the beginning date of each licensee's registration period, so the two-year cycle runs from your own registration date, not a birth month or fixed statewide date. NYSED mails a Registration Renewal Document with a PIN approximately four months before the registration expires (per the Office of the Professions FAQ). Physicians and medical physicists are on two-year periods; most other NY professions are three-year.

$600 (registration renewal for Medicine, MD and DO, per two-year registration period; Office of the Professions Fees Chart, Rev. 2/21). Online payment is credit card only (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) and fees are not refundable.
Late fee
$10 per month of delayed registration ("an additional fee for late filing of ten dollars for each month that registration has been delayed", NY Education Law 6502)
If you miss the deadline
There is no grace period to practice: practicing after a lapse requires actual possession of the registration certificate, and failure to register while practicing can be deemed professional misconduct. Online renewal remains available until 4 months after the registration period ends; after that you must submit a paper Delayed Registration Application, paying the $600 plus $10/month late fees. Paying a delayed registration re-registers you for the full lapsed period in question, not a fresh two years from the payment date. Physicians not practicing in NY can switch to Inactive status free of charge and avoid late fees; resuming practice requires re-registration and any applicable post-licensure requirements.

Does my New York medical license expire? ▾
No. Under Education Law 6502 the license is valid for the life of the holder unless revoked, annulled, or suspended. What expires is your registration to practice, which physicians must renew every two years with NYSED's Office of the Professions.
How much does renewal cost? ▾
$600 per two-year registration period for Medicine (MD and DO), per the Office of the Professions Fees Chart. Online payment is by credit card only (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) and fees are not refundable. An optional professional photo ID card is an extra $30.
How do I renew online? ▾
Use the NYSED eServices portal at https://eservices.nysed.gov/professions/renewal/start with the seven-character PIN from the Registration Renewal Document mailed to you about four months before expiration. You can renew online if no more than 5 months remain in your current period or your last period ended less than 4 months ago. Processing takes up to 2 business days.
What happens if I miss my renewal? ▾
A late filing fee of $10 accrues for each month registration is delayed. Within 4 months of expiration you can still renew online; after that you must submit a Delayed Registration Application. Payment re-registers you for the full lapsed period, not a new two years, and you cannot practice until you actually possess the registration certificate.
Is there a CME requirement to renew? ▾
New York has no general CME hour requirement for physician registration renewal. Separate mandates still apply: infection control coursework every four years, a one-time child abuse identification course, and the NYS mandatory prescriber education (3 hours pain management, palliative care, and addiction) for DEA-registered prescribers under NYSDOH rules.
I am not practicing in New York right now. Do I still have to pay? ▾
No. You can place your registration in Inactive status free of charge and owe no late fees for the inactive period. To resume practice you must re-register and meet any post-licensure requirements for the profession before practicing.
