30-day grace period by statute (N.J.S.A. 45:1-7.1(b)): the license may be renewed within 30 days after expiration by paying the renewal fee plus late fee, and during those 30 days the license remains valid and the physician is not deemed practicing without a license. Any license not renewed within 30 days of expiration is SUSPENDED without a hearing, and continued practice after the 30 days is unlicensed practice even if no suspension notice was received (45:1-7.1(c)). Reinstatement (N.J.S.A. 45:1-7.4; request application via BMEReinstatement@dca.njoag.gov) requires: renewal application, certification of employment for every job held during suspension, the current biennial renewal fee, the unpaid back renewal fee, a $175 reinstatement fee, and proof of the CME that was due (board presentation adds a criminal history background check). A current out-of-state license in good standing with that state's CE satisfied can substitute for the CME proof. The board may require an examination, skills assessment, or refresher course if it suspects practice deficiencies.

No. New Jersey has one board: the State Board of Medical Examiners licenses both MDs and DOs (and podiatrists) on the same June 30 odd-year cycle, and the board's FAQ confirms DOs hold all the same practice authority as MDs.
Do I have to finish my CME before renewing? ▾
Yes. 100 credits (at least 40 Category 1) for the two years before renewal is a condition of biennial renewal, including the topic mandates such as the 2-credit sexual misconduct prevention course due before the close of the 2027 renewal. Waiver or extension requests must be sent by certified mail at least 60 days before expiration; hours are never prorated for mid-cycle licensure unless you qualify for the new-graduate initial-cycle exemption.
