Fixed date, statewide: the renewal application and fee must be received and satisfactorily complete on or before December 31 of each odd-numbered year for all physicians and physician associates (OAR 847-008-0005(1)). All MD/DO licensees share the same deadline regardless of when the license was issued; the current registration period ends December 31, 2027. Emeritus renews by December 31 every year; acupuncturists (also under this board) renew by June 30 of even-numbered years.

If you miss the deadline
No grace period for practice: a license not renewed by December 31 lapses and the licensee may not practice; practicing medicine on a lapsed license is practicing without a license, a felony and grounds for discipline (board renewal page). Reinstatement path (OAR 847-008-0050): within 90 days of the end of the registration period, reinstate by paying the $195 late fee plus the renewal fees and completing the required forms. After 90 days but within two biennia, a full Reactivation Application is required ($50 processing fee) plus the late fee and back renewal fees for the lapsed periods, with additional requirements under OAR 847-008-0055. A license not reinstated or reactivated within two biennia (about 4 years) expires, and the former licensee must reapply as a new applicant under current requirements.

Will I be audited for CME at renewal? ▾
Possibly. The board runs a random CME audit of renewing licensees; you are notified during the renewal application and must respond within 60 days with documentation. Ongoing maintenance of certification participation can satisfy the audit, and staff will verify it directly with the certifying board. Oregon requires 60 hours per biennium plus the Pain Management Commission module and cultural competency hours (OAR 847-008-0070).
I am leaving Oregon or not practicing here. What should I do at renewal? ▾
The board's options: renew at Inactive status if you will not work in Oregon now, or Locum Tenens if you will work intermittently (with advance written notice of each Oregon practice date and location). If you will not return, you can surrender or retire the license at the start of the renewal application, or simply let it lapse by taking no action.
