When it is due

Every year, no later than 30 days after the licensee's birthday, regardless of license issue date (N.C. Gen. Stat. 90-13.2). A licensee's first renewal is due within 30 days of their NEXT birthday, even if that birthday falls shortly after the license was issued.

If you miss the deadline

After the $50 late fee is assessed (30 days past the birthday), the board sends a certified letter and the licensee has an additional 30 days to complete renewal. If renewal is still not completed within that period, the license is automatically placed on inactive status, and it is unlawful to practice with an inactive license. A license inactive for less than one year (with no discipline involved) can be reactivated: application plus $263 fee, fingerprint cards, and a CME log for the inactive period; average processing is 8 weeks. Inactive more than one year, or inactive due to board action, requires full reinstatement, which is essentially a new licensure application. Physicians out of clinical practice for two or more years may also be required to demonstrate competence, determined case by case.
