If you miss the deadline

The board does not describe July 1 to 31 as a grace period; the deadline is June 30 and the late renewal process opens August 1. After August 1 the licensee must submit a late renewal request through MELS with an explanation, and the Board must approve it before the license is renewed (licensee notified by email). Late fines are $25.00 plus $5.00 per delinquent month. If the license has been expired for more than one year, renewal is no longer possible: the physician must apply for reinstatement. The reinstatement application fee is $250.00 non-refundable (credited toward the total due on approval), and under Miss. Code section 73-25-14 the applicant must pay back fees for up to the five prior renewal years plus the current year: $300 renewal + $25 late penalty + $5 per delinquent month for each lapsed year, so a full unrenewed year totals $385.00.

These are the mistakes Mississippi physicians most commonly make during renewal:

If you file a late renewal request while the next active renewal window (May 1 to June 30) is already open, the board requires you to renew and pay for BOTH the late period and the current renewal period.

Monthly $5.00 delinquency fees start accruing from July 1 of the missed renewal year, and at reinstatement the board collects arrearages for up to five prior renewal years at $385 per full lapsed year, so a multi-year lapse can exceed $1,600 even after the $250 application-fee credit.

CME is certified only in even-numbered renewal years, and the 2-year CME cycle ends June 30 of even years, the same day as the renewal deadline; a CME waiver must be requested before April 1 of the final year of the cycle, well before renewal closes.

Beginning February 27, 2026 the Board no longer accepts CME documentation directly: you must either maintain an account with a Board-approved tracker (CE Broker, ACCME, ABMS, AOA) with your Mississippi license identified in it, or hold active ABMS/AOA certification. Lifetime board certification without ongoing MOC does NOT satisfy the requirement, and you must still keep records for audit.
