Last day of the licensee's birth month, every two years. Rule 360-2-.05: all active licenses must be renewed biennially by the last day of the month in which the applicant's birthday falls, and the license expires at the end of that birth month.

If you miss the deadline
No grace period to practice: a licensee may not practice after the expiration date. Rule 360-2-.05 gives a right to late renewal during the 3-month period immediately following expiration, with the $455 late renewal fee. Any license not renewed by the end of that 3-month window is administratively revoked for failure to renew (non-disciplinary), removing all rights to practice in Georgia. After that, reinstatement is required under Rule 360-2-.07: $500 fee plus 40 CME hours in the prior 2 years if the physician did not practice after expiration; $1,000 plus 10 extra CME hours if the physician practiced on a license expired 12 months or less; $2,000 plus 40 extra CME hours if practiced on a license expired more than 12 months. Reinstatement is discretionary, and a practice gap over 30 consecutive months can trigger remedial requirements such as SPEX or PLAS.

Do I have to send in my CME certificates when I renew? ▾
No. You attest to CME compliance in the renewal application, but the Board audits a fixed percentage of renewals, so keep records for five years. Georgia requires 40 hours of Board-approved CME per biennium (AMA Cat 1, AOA Cat 1, AAFP Prescribed, ACOG Cognates Cat 1, or ACEP Cat 1).
