One renewal notice is sent by email or mail at least 30 days before expiration, usually in late October.

If you miss the deadline
No grace period. The license lapses after December 31 and it is illegal to practice with a lapsed license from day one. Lapsed at least 60 days but under 1 year: renewal application, $350 fee, CME proof, plus clearance from FSMB sent directly to the division (12 AAC 40.025(a)). Lapsed 1 to 5 years: Reinstatement of Medical License Application (form 08-4974), CME proof, FSMB clearance, DEA clearance sent directly by DEA, license verifications from every state ever licensed, and hospital privilege verifications for the past 5 years (12 AAC 40.025(b)). Lapsed 5 years or more: considered expired and may not be reinstated; a new license application is required. A separate 30-day grace period can be requested on the renewal form solely for completing unfinished CME.

When does my Alaska medical license expire? ▾
December 31 of even-numbered years, for every licensee regardless of when the license was issued. The current cycle runs January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026, so the next renewal deadline is December 31, 2026. Exception: a license first issued within 90 days of the expiration date (after roughly October 1 of the even year) is issued straight through to the next biennial expiration.
How much does renewal cost? ▾
$350 for a full-term active biennial renewal (MD and DO use the same form and fee). If your license was first issued in the second year of the cycle, the renewal fee is prorated to $175. Inactive status renewal is $200 (or $100 prorated), and converting to retired status is a one-time $150.
Can I renew online? ▾
Yes. Renew through the MY LICENSE self-service portal at ProfessionalLicense.Alaska.Gov/MYLICENSE, which signs in through your myAlaska account. Paper renewal (form 08-0077) is also accepted by mail only; faxed or emailed applications are not accepted.
Is there a grace period if I miss the deadline? ▾
No. The license lapses after December 31 and practicing on a lapsed license is illegal. If lapsed under 1 year you renew with the normal $350 fee plus FSMB clearance (required once lapsed at least 60 days); lapsed 1 to 5 years requires the full reinstatement application with DEA clearance and state verifications; lapsed 5 or more years cannot be reinstated at all. The only grace mechanism is a 30-day extension you can request on the form specifically to finish CME.
What do I attest to for CME? ▾
50 hours of AMA Category 1 (or AOA Category 1 or 2) CME awarded between January 1 of the odd year and December 31 of the even year, averaging 25 per year, including at least 2 hours in pain management and opioid use and addiction unless you certify you hold no DEA registration. Retired-status renewals are exempt. The division audits a random percentage after renewal; keep records 4 years, or use ACCME PARS so staff can verify hours for you.
How long does renewal processing take? ▾
Plan on 4 to 6 weeks for a correct and complete application. Once processed, the license is available for printing through the MY LICENSE portal.
I hold a DEA registration. What extra steps apply? ▾
You must be registered with the Alaska PDMP, and the renewal requires verifying your PDMP account at alaska.pmpaware.net: confirming your specialty, contact information, DEA number, and delegates, and acknowledging the requirement to review a patient's prescription history before prescribing, administering, or dispensing federally scheduled II or III controlled substances (and every 30 days for up to 90 days, then quarterly for ongoing treatment). Practitioners who directly dispense scheduled II to IV substances must report dispensations daily.
